How to Check if a Phone Number is on WhatsApp
You have a phone number and want to know if the person uses WhatsApp before messaging them. Maybe you'd rather WhatsApp than call, or you need to choose between WhatsApp and SMS for a message. Either way, you need to check first.
WhatsApp doesn't have an official "lookup" feature, but there are several reliable ways to find out.
Method 1: The wa.me Link Test
The quickest check without saving any contacts:
- Open your browser
- Go to
https://wa.me/[number]— replace[number]with the full phone number including country code, no+, no spaces - Example:
https://wa.me/15551234567
If the number is on WhatsApp: You'll see a "Message" button that opens a WhatsApp chat.
If the number is NOT on WhatsApp: You'll see a message saying the phone number is not on WhatsApp, or the page won't load a chat option.
Important: The number must be in international format without the + sign. 15551234567 for a US number, 447911123456 for a UK number. If you're unsure about the format, paste the number into NumSwift first — it validates and formats the number correctly, and the WhatsApp button generates the right link automatically.
You can also use our WhatsApp link generator to create the correctly formatted link.
Method 2: Save and Check in WhatsApp (Traditional)
The old method that still works:
- Save the phone number as a contact on your phone
- Open WhatsApp → New Chat
- If the person has WhatsApp, they'll appear in your contact list with their profile picture and status
- If they don't appear, they're not on WhatsApp (or they use a different number)
Downside: You have to save the contact, which syncs to your cloud and clutters your address book. For checking one number it's tolerable. For checking 10 numbers, it's painful.
For tips on avoiding contact clutter, see our guide on sending WhatsApp without saving contacts.
Method 3: WhatsApp Business App
If you use the WhatsApp Business app:
- Open the app
- Tap New Chat
- Type the phone number in the search field (with country code)
- WhatsApp shows whether the number is registered
The WhatsApp Business app is more lenient about searching by number directly, making it useful for checking without saving contacts.
What the Results Tell You
Number is on WhatsApp
- The wa.me link opens a chat
- Profile picture and "last seen" may be visible (depending on their privacy settings)
- You can message them immediately
Number is NOT on WhatsApp
- The person doesn't have WhatsApp installed, or
- They registered with a different phone number, or
- They deleted their account
Number shows no profile info
- The person has WhatsApp but has restricted their privacy settings
- "Last seen" and profile picture hidden doesn't mean they don't have WhatsApp — it means they've set privacy to "Nobody" or "My contacts"
Checking Multiple Numbers
If you have a list of numbers and need to know which ones are on WhatsApp:
There's no bulk lookup tool — WhatsApp's API doesn't support mass number verification for privacy reasons.
Practical approach:
- Paste all numbers into NumSwift's phone number extractor
- Click the WhatsApp button for each number
- If the wa.me link opens a chat, they're on WhatsApp
- If it doesn't, fall back to SMS or call — NumSwift provides those buttons too
This is manual but systematic. You check each number once and know immediately which channel to use.
Why the Number Might Not Show Up
Even if someone uses WhatsApp, they might not appear when you check:
- Wrong country code —
5551234567without the country code is ambiguous. Always use the full international format. NumSwift's phone number validator can help you confirm the format is correct. - Different number registered — They might use WhatsApp on a different SIM or phone number
- Recently changed numbers — WhatsApp takes time to update when users change their phone number
- Account deleted — They may have uninstalled WhatsApp or deleted their account
WhatsApp vs SMS: Making the Choice
Once you know whether a number is on WhatsApp, you can choose the right channel:
- On WhatsApp → Message via WhatsApp (free, read receipts, rich media)
- Not on WhatsApp → Send SMS (universal, no app required) or call
For a detailed comparison of when to use each channel, see our WhatsApp vs SMS vs Email guide.
Tips
-
Always use the country code. The wa.me check only works with international format.
wa.me/5551234567may not resolve correctly — usewa.me/15551234567(with the1for US). -
Don't trust the absence of a profile picture. Some WhatsApp users set their profile visibility to "Nobody." No photo doesn't mean no WhatsApp.
-
Check from NumSwift for convenience. Paste the number, and the WhatsApp button either works (they're on WhatsApp) or doesn't. No need to manually construct wa.me URLs.
-
Respect privacy. If someone hasn't given you their number for WhatsApp messaging, the fact that they have WhatsApp doesn't mean they want to hear from you on it. Use the channel appropriate to your relationship.

Bottom Line
The fastest way to check if a number is on WhatsApp: open wa.me/[full-number] in your browser. If a chat opens, they're on WhatsApp. For formatted numbers with instant WhatsApp buttons, paste any text into NumSwift — the WhatsApp action for each extracted number doubles as a quick check. No contact saving, no app switching.
